Beauty courses pioneered at UCOL Wairarapa have been mirrored at campuses in Wanganui and Palmerston North.
Beauty @ UCOL yesterday opened their latest facilities at the Palmerston North campus, following in the footsteps of the Wairarapa campus that had operated beauty courses since 2000, said Margot Ferrick, associate head of the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Continuing Education.
Whanganui UCOL introduced their Certificate in Beauty Services last year and this year launched a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Ms Ferrick said.
The 24 Certificate in Beauty Services at the Palmerston North campus will be the first to use the 200sq m facilities.
The suite is a fully functioning clinic and during their training, the students will offer beauty and manicure services to UCOL staff, students and the public.
Ms Ferrick says the establishment of a dedicated beauty programme and suite has taken three years to realise.
"We have now brought all our beauty programmes in line across all three campuses."
All campuses plan to offer the Diploma in Beauty Therapy by next year.
Hairdressing, Beauty Services and Retail level 2 courses began at UCOL Wairarapa in 2004. The courses - the National Certificate in Cosmetology, National Certificate in Hairdressing and the National Certificate in Retail - can be taken singly or as a package.
The classes operate in a dedicated beauty suite and cover retail and beauty services; self-management, social, communication and co-operative skills; occupational health and safety, first aid and health studies and communication.
The courses prepare students for hairdressing apprenticeships, beauty advisers in pharmacies and beauty services operators.
