Vehicle stolen, set alight

A thief who stole a Toyota Surf from Masterton set fire to it at Double Bridges near Rangitumau last night.

The vehicle was stolen from outside the Red Star clubrooms on Herbert Street between 6.30pm and 8pm yesterday. Police found the burning vehicle about 10.30pm with the wheels removed.

Police said the vehicle had a very distinctive rear wheel cover that read "Honk if you bonk" and are asking for anyone who saw the vehicle last night to contact them.

Meanwhile, police tracked down a boat that had been stolen from Hawke's Bay at the weekend to a Masterton rural property.

A Masterton man, 25, has been arrested and charged with the theft of the 5m fibreglass boat from the front of a property in Hastings.

The boat was reported stolen at 5pm on Sunday.

It is valued at $5000.
