A lost Chilean tramper has been rescued by helicopter this morning after a night lost in the Tararua Range.

The 29-year-old tourist became disoriented in the vicinity of Mount Holdsworth in the Tararua Forest Park near Masterton yesterday.

He had gone to Mt Holdsworth for a day hike and lost the track on his return journey to Holdsworth Lodge.

He alerted authorities by phone. Police said last night that he was not equipped for an overnight stay in the forest park.

Rescue helicopter could not reach his location yesterday due to low cloud, but five volunteer search teams were sent to the area overnight.

He was found by helicopter this morning and brought safely to Masterton.
