Teen faces driving charges

A Masterton teenager sentenced to community detention six weeks ago for a driving rampage that included deliberately smashing into two police cars was back in court yesterday on fresh charges.

Dylan John Terry, 18, unemployed, did not enter a plea to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified, offences police say occurred in Carterton 19 days ago.

Terry was remanded on bail until November 22 by Judge Peter Hobbs to give him a chance to seek legal advice.

Duty solicitor Jock Blathwayt said that when the charges were laid Terry had applied for legal aid but had been refused.

Mr Blathwayt said in view of "previous offending", Terry needed legal advice and the judge agreed, telling Terry he should apply to have his legal aid application reconsidered.

On September 27, Terry was sentenced to six months' community detention, nine months' supervision, had his driver's licence cancelled for 18 months and was ordered to pay reparation of $33,450.

He had pleaded guilty to burglary, reckless driving, failing to stop for police, and two charges of aggravated assault relating to the ramming of two patrol cars. The burglary charge involved an earlier offence.
