Show draws crowds on busy summer weekend

Masterton's 146th Masterton A&P; Show was well received during a big weekend for events in Wairarapa.

Show manager Ally O'Neill said numbers were slightly down compared with previous years.

"We're only down marginally. We normally get seven to eight thousand over the two days. [We've had] maybe 300 less.

"We've been happy with the weekend, considering how much activity has been in the Wairarapa this weekend," Mr O'Neill said.

The Joe Lumsden Rough Riders Stunt Show was popular, attracting a large crowd.

The final section of the gate-to-plate, with the judging of lamb dishes cooked by local chefs, also had high spectator numbers.

There was cattle and sheep judging and equestrian events.

The Champion of Champions for show jumping was Alana Clapperton.

Mr O'Neill said while he was pleased with how the weekend had gone, he would like to see improved organisation of events in the future. "There were so many other events competing with us, it needs to be better co-ordinated," he said.
