Shoplifter sentenced

A 29-year-old Kuripuni woman who stole clothes worth $51.74 from Cotton On was convicted of shoplifting and placed on a nine-month period of supervision in Masterton District Court last week.

Sarah O'Brien was also directed by Judge Bruce Davidson to undertake any relevant counselling and assessments deemed necessary by the probation services.

On November 16, O'Brien entered the Cotton On store and selected numerous items of clothing, some of which she placed in a bag. She paid for some of the items but staff found a number of T-shirts which she had attempted to take out of the store.

O'Brien had a number of previous convictions.

Lawyer Virginia Pearson said O'Brien was a mother of three and when she was under stress she had a history of offending in this manner. Ms Pearson said O'Brien "did not know" why she had taken the items.
