Road crash gold for 'perfect rescue'

They are breaking out the bubbly in Greytown with news the town's fire brigade road crash rescue team has won gold in the Australasian Road Rescue Challenge held in Melbourne.

The Greytown team took top honours in a recognised difficult event - the controlled rescue - in which the team was faced with a person trapped under the rear wheels of a truck trailer with a Holden car smashed under the same trailer and with another person trapped inside that vehicle.

Judges were so impressed with the Greytown team they described theirs as "the perfect rescue".

Teams from throughout Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong competed in the event - and one of the surprising facts to emerge from the challenge was that brand new production line test vehicles that were used.

By the end of the four days of competition, 60 new cars had been crushed to simulate different crash scenes.

When all the competition points had been added up Greytown had finished fourth overall.

The top team was Werribee, who attend up to 2500 real crash events each year, from Morrinsville, Cairns, then Greytown and Whitianga equal fourth.
