Masterton police are seeking a cheeky thief with a chainsaw who felled a mature conifer on public land on the outskirts of McJorrow Park, Masterton, and made off with the wood.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said the tree had been felled sometime on Monday with the culprits taking all the trunk wood and, presumably, some of the larger boughs.

"All that was left behind was the stump and a pile of branches," he said.

Mr Burr said it was likely people living nearby had heard a chainsaw working and they could hold the key to finding out who was responsible.
