Masterton pianist Andre Mendes da Costa has won the Corporate Events Guide 2009 Peoples Choice Award for the Best Nationwide Bands.
Pianist Andre Mendes da Costa and his Masterton "band of black and white keys" have captured a national people's choice award.
Mendes da Costa, a cleaning technician by day, said he is pleased to have topped the Corporate Events Guide People's Choice Awards for the Best Nationwide Bands category, which was decided by public vote, even though he did not realise the accolade was presented at an Auckland show last month
"I was delighted and surprised to receive a phone call informing me that I am the winner of the best nationwide bands category - me and my band of black and white keys'" he said.
He was aware of his nomination and inclusion two months ago as one of five national finalists, and the award will hopefully lead to more work as a pianist at private and corporate functions in Wairarapa and surrounding regions.
"A huge thank you to all who supported my nomination by voting - you made it happen," he said.
Stuart Macklin, Corporate Events Guide managing director, said the people's choice awards are now in their fourth year with 13,000 votes cast over the past 12 months for the latest round of awards.
"The awards are a fantastic accolade that provides clients with confidence and reassurance when booking."
Mendes da Costa said he has not pursued music as a primary career although "it is a significant part in my life".
According to his website, he has performed as a freelance pianist and keyboard player and vocalist with bands in New Zealand and Australia, including the Brisbane-based Backstreet Blues Band during the 1980's.
<PARASTYLE:Body Text>He said he has played many Wairarapa engagements since shifting to the region with his wife and two children four years ago, including playing for free at the Bride of the Year event for the past free years.
He almost shared a stage with the late Sir Howard Morrison at the Wairarapa Kaumatua Ball earlier this year although he settled for a backstage "chat" after the event as Sir Howard had "regrettably" brought recorded backing for the performance.
Mendes da Costa said he is a committed family man and refuses to overbook as a pianist for their sake although he expects the award to increase his musical workload.
His next date is at the Fletcher Construction Group corporate function being held at Te Papa Museum in Wellington, he said.
