Over limit man guilty of driving into house

A recidivist drink-driver who became the second boozed motorist to plough into a Carterton couple's house has been convicted on two charges.

Carterton labourer Samuel Ashley Weber, 30, appeared in the Masterton District Court yesterday on one charge of operating a vehicle carelessly and another count of a third or subsequent excess breath-alcohol reading.

The court heard that Weber - who was later breathalysed at 721mcg of alcohol per litre of breath - drove his car from the Carterton pub where he had been drinking just after midnight on July 29.

In dense fog, Weber drove through the Augustus and Pembroke Sts intersection into Robbie and Chris Davies' house, which is on the T-junction.

The impact jolted them from sleep, knocked the phone off the wall and caused $9000 damage to their home.

The crash was the second time the couple had been rudely awoken in their Carterton bedroom by a drink-driver - the first was 12 years ago.

In the most recent "car invasion", the couple said they found an apologetic Weber staring at them from behind the wheel - much in the manner of his plastered predecessor.

"I thought it was a big earthquake. Chris sat up in a big hurry, and then I realised nothing's moving. I look out of the window and there he was. I was thinking, 'You stupid boy'. I told him he was stupid," Mr Davies said.

Senior Constable Paul Dallinger said the couple had been lucky not to have been injured.

Mr Dallinger said Weber had barrelled straight through the T-intersection without braking but didn't appear to have been speeding.

He was convicted on both counts and remanded for sentencing in November.
