What was generally expected to be a close tussle turned out to be anything but when Opaki beat Masterton 8-1 in their Wairarapa regional one tennis fixture on Saturday.
The end result wasn't any great surprise though as Masterton took to the courts without three of their leading players, Luke and Georgia Atkinson and Chad Parsons, and Opaki became firm favourites as a consequence.
The singles saw Stu Wyeth, Brett Dymond, Chris Davidson, Ben Campbell and Katie Wyeth all do the business in straight sets for Opaki while the sole Masterton success came from Zoe Paris.
For Campbell it was a brief break from his busy schedule on the professional golfing circuit and he completed a successful day out when he and Katie Wyeth combined for a comfortable mixed doubles win. Also successful for Opaki in that section were Dymond and Rebecca Perry while the sole men's doubles match played was a triumph for Stu Wyeth and Davidson.
Opaki names first:
Men's singles: Stu Wyeth beat Duncan Oakley 6-2, 6-2; Brett Dymond beat Matt Bunny 6-4, 6-2; Chris Davidson beat Jamie McMaster 7-5, 6-1; Ven Campbell beat George Passi 6-3, 7-5.
Women's singles: Katie Wyeth beat Dushka Warren 6-2, 6-1; Rebecca Perry lost to Zoe Paris 1-6, 4-6.
Men's doubles: Wyeth and Davidson beat McMaster and Passi 7-5, 6-2.
Mixed doubles: Campbell and Wyeth beat Oakley and Paris 6-2, 6-3; Dymond and Perry beat Bunny and Warren 6-4, 6-1.
The other regional one fixture scheduled for Saturday didn't eventuate with Gladstone defaulting to Martinborough.
