Narrow victory a first

Gladstone recorded their first win in the 2012-13 Wairarapa regional one tennis competition when they scored a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Masterton on Saturday.

A newcomer to the Gladstone team, Tracey Donald played a key role in their success.

Donald, who has played regional one for Pirinoa in the past, won her singles and combined doubles matches while other Gladstone wins came from Alistair McWilliam and Scott Day in the singles and Day and Bruce Patrick in the men's doubles.

Masterton took out three of the singles through the efforts of Chad Parsons, Jamie McMaster and Georgia Atkinson and Parsons and Atkinson also teamed up for a combined doubles victory.

Results, Gladstone names first:

Men's singles: Alistair McWilliam beat Duncan Oakley 6-2, 6-4; Angus Preston lost to Chad Parsons 1-6, 2-6; Bruce Patrick lost to Jamie McMaster 6-4, 5-7, 1-6; Scott Day beat Boyden Walker 6-3, 6-3.

Women's singles: Bridget Needham lost to Georgia Atkinson 0-6, 0-6; Tracey Donald beat Zoe Paris 6-1, 6-1.

Men's doubles: Day and Patrick beat McMaster and Walker 6-4, default.

Combined doubles: McWilliam and Donald beat Oakley and Paris 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; Preston and Needham lost to Parsons and Atkinson 4-6, 1-6.
