A regular tot of rum, bananas and years of riding a bike have
helped Roy Larsen to reach the 100-year milestone.
Mr Larsen has never owned a car and relied on his trusty
bicycle to get him from A to B _ or more correctly to the fruit
shop and the rum wholesaler _  for years, and that coupled with
being a lifetime non-smoker has paid dividends in longevity.
Celebrating his 100th birthday with friends and  family, Mr Larsen could reflect
on a long and enjoyable retirement since giving up work as a carpenter for Jenkin Bros
and Dixon and McKinlay.
He rode his bicycle round Masterton virtually every day
until he was well into his 90s and took a drink at the
Wairarapa Services and Citizens Club three times a
week until six  weeks ago when he was stricken with the flu and
has had difficulty fighting it off.
Mr Larsen liked the races and has a photo of three-times Wellington Cup winner Great Sensation on his bedroom wall, a fitting name it would seem on a day when reaching 100 must have seemed a great achievement.
He has outlived his wife Nell by many years and has one
daughter, Lois Foster, who was busy yesterday helping to
organise the birthday celebrations.
