Student builders at Makoura College are well on their way to constructing a three-bedroom house in the grounds of the school.
Senior technology teacher Bill Taylor said the Level 3 apprenticeship-grade project involved eight students and would be finished by the end of the year.
He said the building crew worked two days a week on the project and, even though they were occasionally rained off, the construction was progressing on schedule.
He said three of the eight boys working on the project, which comes under the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, helped build a two-bedroom cottage at the school last year that was sold and shifted to Manaia Rd.
He said the small profit from the sale of the cottage had purchased tools and equipment for the technology department and the same is hoped for the 93sq m house being built this year.
He said the latest project was not as complex as last year's cottage but the Year 12 and 13 students on the job would leave the worksite with 12 months of apprentice-grade study that was transferable to the workforce.
