Lights stay on, but we?re not paying the bill

THE lights may well have all gone out in Massachusetts but they have stayed on in Villa Street, Albert Street and Lincoln Road in Masterton continuously since Sunday.

Residents who have seen the light, pictured, and wondered who is picking up the bill for the non-stop street lighting have been assured by Masterton District Council chief executive Wes ten Hove they can sleep easy ? it's not costing ratepayers a single cent more.

The lights are on as part of maintenance monitoring, and as the council pays a set fee for street lighting, the extra power used is not a charge on the council.

Mr ten Hove said there was an obvious explanation for why the lights remained on for 50 per cent of the time: "It's dark."
