Injured woman recovers after falling in bike race

A 17-year-old Woodville woman was airlifted to hospital after falling off a bike during a motocross race, sustaining moderate injuries.

Medical services at the Bush Bash six-hour trail bike event in Tiraumea were concerned the woman could have suffered back or neck injuries, organiser Stu Sowry said.

She was hurt after coming off her motorcycle during the marathon trail ride event which attracted more than a dozen riders at Tiraumea, southeast of Pahiatua on Sunday.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter base manager Marc Bridgman said the woman was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate chest and abdominal injuries. She was treated and released.

Mr Sowry said there was "relief" the injuries were not more serious.

"Naturally we're very happy with the outcome. She is now at home and she's well," he said.

The teen is a member of the Bushriders Motorcycle Club.
