Injured teenager is stable

A 16-year-old who was flown to Wellington Hospital on Christmas Day after he was trapped in a car in rural Carterton is in a stable condition.

The vehicle had left the road after the driver had failed to negotiate a right-hand bend at the top of a rise on Waihakeke Rd.

A 17-year-old received moderate injuries.

The Martinborough pair were in a Mitsubishi Lancer which went down a bank and into a paddock, rolling several times before coming to rest.

The 16-year-old was freed from the car and taken to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition, after a call was received about 5.30am.

A Wellington Hospital spokesperson confirmed the 16-year-old was in stable condition yesterday.

However, a Wairarapa Hospital spokesperson was unable to be contacted to confirm the condition of the 17-year-old.
