Greytown painter Jane Kellahan has been selected as one of two New Zealand artists to represent the country at the Biennale of Chianciano in Italy on September 17.

She is one of 160 artists worldwide selected to participate in the prestigious event, which gathers well-known and emerging artists from all over the world, in the second most important Art Biennale in Europe after the Venice Biennale.

"I am thrilled and honoured to represent New Zealand and it shows that Kiwi artists are on the forefront of art and creativity in the international arts arena," Kellahan said.

An art party and auction held under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy and featuring artworks by Kellahan has raised nearly $30,000 to go towards her participation in the event. "I'm rapt with the result," she said.

"It was great to have so many of my supporters and friends there enjoying the beautiful food and drinks provided by my sponsors, and then buying the works and donated prizes."
