We all know times are tough at the moment, and there's not a lot of spare cash around - especially in the lead-up to Christmas.
It's the time of year when the paypackets need to be carefully stretched to make it through the holiday, and meet all the extra demands of the festive season.
So that's why it's heartening to see the response to an online auction for Sophie King, a young Masterton girl who has undergone a dozen operations in two years to treat a brain tumour.
Now recovering, her family wanted to see her take a holiday to the Gold Coast - and now have more than $1000 towards the cause.
The money came from the winning bid for a piece of birthday cake from Prince Charles' birthday celebrations in Wellington earlier this month, and from donors who just wanted to support her cause.
And that means the Kings, who plan a family holiday once Sophie is well enough to travel, have received a lovely early Christmas present.
Thanks for your feedback on our website redesign, launched last week - keep it coming.
Remember the new site makes it easier than ever to submit your stories and photographs to the paper - go to www.times-age.co.nz, and click on "share your story".
We're really pleased with the new site but as you may have noticed, we're having some teething problems with the homepage weather.
Our quick link only displays Wellington or Napier temperatures - which, as we all know, is no indication of what the weather will be like here at home.
We're working on fixing this and will have it displaying the correct weather as soon as possible.
