Greytown Rugby Club is reaching out to a star wheelchair rugby player who can't reach the world championship.

Tetraplegic Chris Lay, 27, says he's aiming for gold but he needs at least $2000 to join his team at the world championships in Vancouver next month.

Greytown Rugby Club chairman Neil Morison is holding an auction and raffle for the local man, who became a tetraplegic after a car accident in 2007. Mr Morison said he read the Times-Age story and wanted to help because  few people in Greytown actually knew they had a top athlete living in their midst.

The   club was putting up 10-12 items for auction, including a signed Hurricanes jersey.  Some items were donated by businesses and Mr Morison hopes more will  open their hearts.

The event will  include  speeches by Mr Lay and the Greytown firefighters who  recently returned from a competition in Melbourne. The auction will be in the Greytown Rugby Club on August 28,  7pm, with $20  door entry.
