Cricket

The future of Wairarapa cricket is in good hands judging by the excellent performance achieved by the year 6 representative side at the annual Riverbend Camp tournament.

Wairarapa won five of their six matches in temperatures which rose to as high as 35C and certainly tested the durability of the players, the youngest of whom, Jake Jonas and Jesse McIntyre, are only nine. All but one of the games were played over 30 overs, the other being over 25 overs.

The only loss for Wairarapa came in their opening game when they lost to EDCA White with the Auckland side scoring 149-6 compared with Wairarapa's 122-6.

Other results: Wairarapa 96 beat Poverty Bay 60, Taradale 106-9 lost to Wairarapa 108-3, Napier Old Boys 67-8 lost to Wairarapa 68-2, Hamilton Old Boys 77 lost to Wairarapa 80-7 and Wairarapa 112-2 beat Onslow 71.

Those to make the Honours Board (awarded for three wickets or 30 runs in any one game) were: Caleb Burling 2 catches and 1 run out, 3-8 and 3-3; Hugo Wakeling 32 not out, 3-8; Jack Oldroyd 31 retired; Jake Jonas 3-8; Jake McIntyre 32 not out, 3-7, 32 retired; John McKenzie 3-19.
