Egg-throwers mar parade

CARTERTON'S Christmas parade was marred by egg-throwing young people on Saturday, when Masterton District Brass Band members were pelted on High Street during the parade.

The eggs were lobbed over the crowd and splattered on the band members as they marched.

One younger band member, Kathryn Babbington, 13, from Masterton Intermediate School, was hit on her band hat by the yolky projectile, which then soiled the uniform of her marching colleague.

Her mother said the incident had not dented her daughter's enthusiasm for marching with the band.

"She was not thrilled, but it hasn't put her off," she said.

Band chairman Kelvin Paris was disappointed by the irresponsible behaviour of some of the crowd.

"It's not very pleasant, and unnecessary to be throwing food. We don't mind if it's confetti," he said.

Mr Paris said even though the turnout for the parade was slightly smaller than previous years, it was always a good event.

The band had played at the opening of the Masterton Recreation Centre earlier that morning.

Police are seeking anyone in the crowd who may have taken a photo of the offender to contact the Carterton police to help with inquiries.
