Drink-driving crackdown held

POLICE had a second drink-driving crackdown in as many weeks on Wairarapa roads at the weekend. Starting Wednesday night last week the Tactical Alcohol Group from Wellington carried out random checks throughout Wairarapa.

They processed about 2000 vehicles over the period until Saturday night and caught eight drivers with excess breath alcohol and impounded four vehicles for various offences.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said it was a "generally disappointing" drink-driving result, as the public should be more aware of the dangers of drink-driving, especially this time of year.

Two weeks ago the Tactical Alcohol Group was in South Wairarapa to coincide with the Toast Martinborough wine festival. In that operation police stopped 3797 vehicles and processed seven people for excess breath alcohol.
