Bowls

The Carterton Bowling & Croquet Club's annual Doug McPhail Competition was held on Sunday, December 30.

McPhail was a long-time member of the club, also holding the positions of vice-president (one year) and president (two years).

McPhail initially played bowls then croquet and, on his retirement, presented the shield to be played as a bowls/croquet combo competition.

This annual event is a competition whereby a bowler is partnered by a croquet player and each pair plays one hour of bowls and then a game of croquet against an opposing pair.

It is a fun event as most of the competitors have not played the other partner's sport and this year was no exception.

Sixteen teams were drawn and then opposing pairs were drawn.

There was only one pair who had a win in their croquet and bowls matches - the team of Mike Shipp (bowler) and Stewart Pye (croquet player).

Shipp also won the shield with Terry Price (croquet) in 2011.
