Double the speed limit earns judge's wrath

A 18-year-old Masterton woman who drove a motor vehicle at 153km/h in a 70km/h zone has been told her driving was "a great danger to the public".

Holly Marie Gray appeared at Masterton District Court on Thursday on charges of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, and driving at dangerous speed.

Judge Thomas Broadmore said he was amazed there hadn't been more serious repercussions. "This was a disgraceful piece of driving and the nature of it was a great danger to the public as well as yourself."

Sergeant Garry Wilson, prosecuting, said the defendant was driving south on Ngaumutawa Rd, Masterton, in a 70 km/h zone on December 14. A marked police vehicle travelling in the opposite direction recorded her speed at 153km/h.

The police pursued her vehicle but Gray failed to stop and turned on to Ballance St, evading police on residential streets for 3.3km. When Gray, a mother of one, was spoken to by police she said she didn't know what came over her.

She was ordered to complete 80 hours of community work and was disqualified from driving for nine months.
