Christmas marred by burglary

When other families are preparing themselves for Christmas, wondering what's going to be under the tree, solo mother, Lisa Pirere, 31, of Greytown and her two children will be wondering how they will be able to replace all the household items that burglars stole in broad daylight from their house last Thursday.

Ms Pirere says she was "gutted" when she returned home from work in Martinborough to discover her house had been broken into.

"I'm not a mean person, and I thought, 'why would someone be mean to me'," she says.

The robbers stole two TVs, a Playstation 2, a CD stereo, a VCR, and CDs and games. Some of the items that were stolen had been bought from money Ms Pirere earned from Mental Health when she looked after a suicidal patient.

"You work so hard to get things for the kids and then someone whips them away in five minutes. I hope the people who did this are feeling guilty this Christmas," she says.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a dark coloured car in the driveway of Ms Pirere's house in the Kempton Place area at around 9.30 to 10am on Thursday December 9.

None of the stolen items were insured. Police suspect the burglars left in a hurry, as other valuable items were not stolen.

"We think they may have been spooked by neighbours, because they left some jewellery on the duchess when they took off," says Ms Pirere. Her family's disappointment was compounded by the fact that the presents she had bought her children for Christmas were CDs and games to be used on the stolen electronic equipment.

"It's quite scary to know that someone has been into your house, and you don't know if they will be coming back,' she says.
