Cable car visits for restoration

The historic Wellington cable car on its way over the Rimutakas to its new home in Gladstone for the next six months. The one-of-a-kind Grip Car No 3 has been in storage in Karori and will now undergo an extensive restoration in Wairarapa. It seems the big jobs are rolling in for the Gladstone wheelwright team of Greg and Ali Lang. They have secured the contract for the restoration and conservation of one of the old classic cable cars, to return it to its former glory. The old car was delivered to the Gladstone workshop on a transporter from Wellington on Wednesday. In an industry that most would consider well past its heyday, the Langs and their staff at the Gladstone Wheelwright Shop have proven there is still a strong demand for their centuries-old craft. Once completed, Grip Car No 3 will be displayed at the Wellington Cable Car Museum, which is the second-most visited museum in Wellington behind Te Papa.
