Contrasting results were the order of the day when regional one inter-club tennis matches continued in Wairarapa on Saturday.

A commanding 9-0 win was secured by Martinborough over Gladstone but Masterton and Opaki had a battle royal, Masterton winning 5-4.

The ease of Martinborough's success over Gladstone was evidenced by the fact Tim Pickering, Andy Darling, Bruce Lovell, James Blundell, Rhona Lovell and Libby Paterson all won their singles in straight sets.

And the southerners won all three doubles as well although Gladstone were more competitive there, two of the three encounters going to the maximum three sets.

Individually the highlight for Martinborough was the effort of experienced campaigner Bruce Lovell who dropped just the one game all day.

Results, Martinborough names first:

Men's singles: Tim Pickering beat Alistair McWilliam 6-3, 6-3; Andy Darling beat Angus Preston 6-2, 6-1; Bruce Lovell beat Scott Day 6-0, 6-0; James Blundell beat Aidan Smith 6-3, 7-5.

Women's singles: Rhona Lovell beat Tracey Donald 7-5, 6-4; Libby Paterson beat Sandra McNab 6-4, 6-4.

Men's doubles: Pickering and Blundell beat McWilliam and Smith 6-2, 3-6, 7-5; Lovell and Darling beat Preston and Day 6-0, 6-1.

Women's doubles: Lovell and Paterson beat Donald and McNab 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

A clean sweep in the women's section played a vital role in Masterton's narrow win over Opaki. Georgia Atkinson and Dushka Warren won their singles and doubles matches and dropped only seven games between them in the process.

It was a somewhat different story in the men's section though where Opaki's Brett Dymond, Chris Davidson and Jon McNab all won their singles. The sole win for Masterton there came from Luke Atkinson who also combined with Boyd Walker for a crucial doubles win.

Results, Masterton names first:

Men's singles: Luke Atkinson beat Stu Wyeth 6-1, 6-3; Boyd Walker lost to Brett Dymond 1-6, 0-6; George Passi lost to Chris Davidson 6-0, 1-6, 4-6; Jamie McMaster lost to Jon McNab 0-6, 2-6.

Women's singles: Georgia Atkinson beat Charlotte Mossman 6-0, 6-0; Dushka Warren beat Rebecca Perry 6-2, 6-1.

Men's doubles: Atkinson and Walker beat Wyeth and Davidson 6-2, 7-5; Passi and McMaster lost to Dymond and McNab 2-6, 3-6.
