A young Masterton designer is excited to be part of the new Shear Fashion show, which will be held later this month.

Amy Hutchinson is one of the designers whose work has been included in the event, which features wool products and is a section of Shear Fest, a new festival to celebrate the Golden Shears.

The former Wairarapa College student has just finished her design degree - majoring in fashion design - at Otago Polytechnic. She plans to head to New York as soon as she can to develop her career.

Miss Hutchinson read about the show and decided it would be a good opportunity to display her work locally, which includes a sheepskin coat and hand-embroidered wool leggings.

Her inspiration came from her childhood in Masterton, where she grew up on a farm, and went from there.

Leonardo da Vinci's theory "without black and white there would be no colour" has also been an influence.

Miss Hutchinson spent a semester completing her garments: "I had about a maximum of four hours' sleep a night."

The show will also include work by high end designers such as Liz Mitchell, of Auckland. Organisers hope the event will continue next year.

The show is on Thursday, February 28, at 8pm. Tickets are available from www.dashtickets.co.nz and i-SITES.
