Ambulance officers assaulted

Two ambulance officers were assaulted during a routine callout on Saturday when a patient became violent.

Police are currently investigating the possibility the assailant was on drugs.

Ambulance manager Marie Long said two officers were attacked after picking up a patient from a Masterton address about 10pm on Saturday.

They were attacked as they assisted the patient out of the ambulance at the emergency department at Masterton Hospital.

The pair were kicked and punched and spat at, she said.

One officer was checked by hospital staff for injuries but both ambulance officers continued to work their shift.

"Neither of the two ambulance officers was seriously injured, but it was a very unpleasant situation," Ms Long said.
