Wairarapa commuters who travel to Wellington Airport are in for a "welcome change" as the Airport Flyer services increase from the train station next year.

NZ Bus said that, from mid-January Airport Flyer buses will run every 10 minutes at peak times between Wellington Station and the airport.

Greater Wellington Regional Council chair Fran Wilde said the council wanted more services for some time but it was not their decision as the service was not subsidised.

"For people who travel to and from the airport at peak times, which includes many Wellington business people, this will be a very welcome change," she said.

She said a route change would also make the service much more attractive by reducing the travel time.

The changes also include the removal of the Upper Hutt to Queensgate (Lower Hutt) leg of the Airport Flyer service.
