An Air Force Orion aircraft  this morning combed the deeper waters off the South Wairarapa coast in the search  for a Martinborough man missing after he went to set crayfish pots yesterday.

Police said the 72-year-old man went to Sandy Bay near Te Awaiti, east of Martinborough, and had set out to set his pots in a small inflatable boat about 11am.

His unoccupied vehicle and trailer were found there about 8.20pm.

Weather conditions yesterday comprised very high off-shore winds and rough seas and the Westpac rescue helicopter was sent to search but was forced to return due to high winds.

The Air Force Orion continued the search this morning.
