Self-described "serious social cyclists" Troy Calder and Terry Gane reckon pedalling 2,200km from Cape Reinga to Bluff is a great way to raise money for charity. The Masterton pair freely admit to being "middle aged and a bit overweight" and said they wanted to do something "completely different" by using the cycling odyssey as a means to raise their target of $10,000 for CanTeen - the New Zealand organisation supporting young people living with cancer. The pair were always going to go on the on the trip but thought it was a great opportunity to raise money as well.
They'll pay their own costs including food, motels and bike repairs so every cent raised will go to CanTeen.
"We'll do all the hard work, train for and complete in this challenge but we really need your help to make a difference to our charity," Mr Calder said.
The pair head up to Cape Reinga on Thursday and will begin the 14-day trip back to the Deep South on Friday.
